Making the cut and moving into 1989 were models #3901 Mighty Dump, #3905 Mighty Mixer, #3907 Mighty Dozer, #3909 Mighty Tow Truck, #3920 Mighty Loader, #3926 Mighty Crane, #3931 Mighty Backhoe, #4010 Mighty Power Kit, #4902 Motorized Mighty Dump and #4909 Motorized Tow Truck. Deleted was model #3977 Mighty Hook and Ladder Fire Truck.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: In 1989, the spokes on the five lug hub used on the XMB-975 tire found on most Mighty Tonkas, were recessed into the wheel. This change saved material, thereby reducing manufacturing costs. Some of the 1989 Tonka dealer catalog pictures show the non-recessed lugs still in use. Remember, the catalog was printed well before the beginning of the model year and Tonka would use all non-recessed inventory before making the change over.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The Hook and Ladder Fire Truck, while being deleted from the Mighty series, found a new home in the Large Vehicle series
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: In 1987, the Mighty Crane was heavily re-engineered, enough so as to change model number from #3925 to #3926. One of the components, the clam, changed from steel to plastic. The plastic clam proved to be so light weight, the clam would not stay closed. In 1989, steel clams replaced the plastic. NOTE: In the factory, the clam was referred to as "Pac Man."
