CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The front bumper was modified to remove the openings for the vinyl bumper pads. Where the bumper pad was, an embossment now appeared. This change was effective for ALL models having front bumpers.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The new MR-970 tire with white roll coated letters and numbers replaced the old two piece black plastic road type tire on the Mighty Crane.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The new MR-970 tire without roll coating, was used on the Mighty Shovel and Mighty Car Carrier.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The new XMB-975 blow-molded tire replaced the large Mighty balloon tire on the Mighty Dump, Mighty Loader, Mighty Scraper, Mighty Wrecker, Mighty Roller, Mighty Hydraulic Dump, Mighty Mixer and Mighty Bottom Dump. The new in 1972 Mighty Grader was born with the new XMB-975 blow-molded tire. The letters and numbers on the sidewall of the XMB-975 tire were left black where ever used in 1972.
NOTE: The images below, scanned from a 1972 Tonka dealer catalog, appear to show the large Mighty balloon tire being used. Tonka historian Lloyd Laumann acknowledges that a small quantity was left from 1971 production and used on 1972 trucks. However, the large Mighty balloon is recognized as being the exception, not the rule.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The umbrella and all four idler wheels were deleted from the #3906 Mighty Dozer.
NOTE: The scanned image of the #3945 Mighty Grader from the 1972 dealer catalog shows no label on the cab when in fact a label was used. The circumstances may again be the labels not being available at the time of of the catalog photo shoot.
