The year was 1965. Tonka had just successfully launched its new Mighty Tonka series at Toy Fair in New York in 1964. To freshen its Regular series, the futuristic looking cab was introduced as Tonka's Gas Turbine. Catalogs were far and away the preferred method of keeping Moms and Dads informed as to the Tonka trucks; Tiny Tonka, Mini Tonka, Regular Tonka or Mighty Tonka; available for purchase at their favorite department store. There were retail giants like Sears, Penneys, Wards and Aldens and the not so giants like Western Auto, Our Own Hardware, J & R Auto Stores and Jordan Marsh Company, just to name a few, all keeping the Tonka name visible and profitable for the retailer and for Tonka.
