1974 offered changes in the appearance of most all trucks in Tonka's Regular series including the Gas Turbine. The tires and wheels went through a major upgrade. Gone was the three piece flotation tire with billboard sidewalls and steel plated wheel cover assembly. A new white, yellow or orange modular style plastic wheel pressed into a new PVC tire casing that included a raised letter sidewall was introduced. Tonka referred to it as their deep cleat billboard tire. It is commonly referred to as the XR-101 tire. Thinking back, modular or mag wheels were very popular styling upgrades in the 1970's. Tonka was on trend.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The Tonka logo decal also changed in 1974. The Tonka over U.S.A. logo gave way to Tonka over a gold field logo. Tonka was a diversified company with operations all over the world.
CHANGES FROM LAST YEAR: The decal attached to the white plastic insert just above the grille, changed to "Tonka" in black letters on a transparent background on both the #2950 Snorkel Pumper and the #2960 Aerial Ladder. Previously, the #2950 and #2960 had a red stripe decal with "Tonka" printed in white letters in the center of the red stripe.
